Years ago, during a long drive home from college through a steady rainstorm, I became completely fixated on the windshield wipers.

The rhythmic motion had captured my attention so completely that I slowly began drifting toward the edge of the road without realizing it. Thankfully, a friend noticed and spoke up before it became a problem.

Looking back, the issue wasn’t that I was paying attention.

The issue was that I had become so focused on one thing that I stopped seeing the bigger picture.

And honestly, I think we do the same thing in life.

We become focused on one struggle. One disappointment. One diagnosis. One unanswered prayer. One relationship. One measurement.

And before long, that single thing becomes our entire scorecard.

In this devotional, we reflect on 1 Samuel 16, Philippians 1, and Galatians 6. Together, these passages remind us that while we naturally focus on what is visible, God sees something deeper. He sees perseverance, faithfulness, wisdom, growth, character, and the work He is doing beneath the surface.

Scripture Focus

1 Samuel 16:7

“The LORD does not see what a man sees. For man sees what is visible, but the LORD sees the heart.”

People naturally focus on visible measurements. God sees something deeper. He sees the work that cannot always be measured with numbers, milestones, or outcomes.

Philippians 1:6

“He who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

God’s work often continues long before we recognize the evidence. His faithfulness is not dependent on our ability to see every place He is working.

Galatians 6:9

“Let us not get tired of doing good, for we will reap at the proper time if we don’t give up.”

Growth is not always immediately visible. Faithfulness often precedes fruit.
