Episode 25: Some of What You Call Personality Began as Survival

What if some of the things you’ve always called personality aren’t actually the whole story?

What if certain patterns, strengths, preferences, and reactions were shaped not only by how God wired you, but also by the experiences that taught you how to navigate the world around you?

In this episode, we explore the difference between personality, temperament, gifting, and adaptation—and why understanding the story beneath our behaviors may be more important than finding the perfect label.

Featured Quote From Episode

“The goal isn’t to figure out which single label explains me. The goal is to understand the many different experiences, gifts, strengths, and adaptations that contributed to the person I became.”

About This Episode

I’ve always been fascinated by personality assessments.

Enneagram. CliftonStrengths. Love Languages. Introvert-extrovert assessments. Leadership profiles.

Over the years, many of those tools have given me language for things I’ve sensed about myself for a long time. They helped explain patterns, strengths, motivations, and ways of interacting with the world.

But eventually I began noticing something they couldn’t explain.

They could describe behaviors.

They couldn’t explain where those behaviors came from.

In this deeply personal episode, I reflect on childhood experiences, family dynamics, conflict, belonging, adaptation, personality frameworks, and the stories we tell ourselves about who we are. We’ll explore how two people can exhibit the same behavior for completely different reasons and why understanding the motivation beneath the behavior often matters more than the behavior itself.

We’ll talk about Harmony and conflict avoidance, introversion and self-protection, adaptation and resilience, grief and growth, and the surprising ways life experiences shape our understanding of ourselves.

Most importantly, we’ll consider a different approach to self-discovery—not asking which label explains us best, but asking what experiences, gifts, strengths, wounds, adaptations, and stories contributed to the person we became.

If you’ve ever wondered why you respond the way you do, felt limited by labels, or sensed there was more to your story than a personality profile could explain, this conversation offers an invitation to look deeper with curiosity rather than judgment.

Key Takeaways

  • Personality assessments can be helpful, but they never tell the whole story.
  • Familiarity is not the same as understanding.
  • The same behavior can come from very different motivations.
  • Some patterns reflect personality; others reflect adaptation.
  • Childhood experiences often shape adult behaviors in ways we don’t immediately recognize.
  • Not every adaptation is unhealthy.
  • Some survival responses eventually become strengths.
  • Self-awareness is the beginning of growth, not the finish line.
  • Compassion creates more healing than self-criticism.
  • Understanding yourself requires curiosity, not judgment.
