Episode 34: When God Doesn’t Answer the Prayer the Way You Expected

Have you ever prayed the same prayer…

over…

and over…

and over again…

until you wondered if God was listening?

Most of us carry at least one prayer that seems to linger longer than we ever imagined. In this conversation, we’ll explore what it means to keep trusting God’s heart when His answers look different than we expected—and discover that His faithfulness is often seen most clearly when we look back at the story He’s been writing all along.

About This Episode

Some prayers change us long before they’re ever answered.

Others are answered in ways we never would have imagined.

In this deeply personal episode, I share my journey through years of infertility, the hardest prayer I’ve ever prayed, standing in a Guatemalan orphanage longing to become a mother, losing my father-in-law during the isolation of COVID, holding my dad’s hand as he took his final breath, and the surprising ways I’ve discovered God’s faithfulness in every chapter of the story.

Together we’ll explore why waiting is often louder than we expect, how surrender is different from giving up, why God’s character matters more than immediate explanations, and how some of His greatest mercies aren’t recognized until years later.

Because our hope has never rested in understanding every answer.

Our hope rests in knowing the One who hears every prayer.

Key Takeaways

  • Waiting often reveals what we believe about God’s character.
  • Honest prayers are always welcome in God’s presence.
  • Surrender isn’t giving up—it’s trusting God with what matters most.
  • Two things can be true at the same time: we can celebrate others while grieving our own unanswered prayers.
  • God’s answers don’t always arrive in the forms we expect.
  • Some mercies are only recognized in hindsight.
  • Peace and pain can exist in the same moment.
  • God’s faithfulness isn’t measured by whether life follows our plans.
  • We rarely see the whole story while we’re living it.
  • God asks us to trust Him with the next step, not the entire journey.

Reflection Question

What prayer have you been carrying the longest?

As you think about that prayer today, what do you already know to be true about God’s character—even if you still don’t understand His answer?

And what would it look like to trust Him with one more faithful step?

Final Thought

We all wish we could see the ending while we’re still living the middle.

We want explanations.

Timelines.

Certainty.

But God has never promised spoilers.

He has promised His presence.

The chapter you’re living today isn’t the whole story.

There may be mercies you won’t recognize until years from now.

There may be answers that arrive wearing completely different clothes than the ones you expected.

And there may still be questions that won’t make complete sense until heaven.

Until then…

Keep bringing your whole heart to God.

The polished prayers.

The desperate prayers.

The exhausted prayers.

Even the ones that sound exactly like yesterday’s.

Because He has never stopped listening.

He has never stopped loving you.

And He has never stopped writing a story that is bigger, wiser, and more beautiful than you can yet see.

Neither are you.
