Episode 18: Shrinking to Keep the Peace (and What It Cost Me)

Some of the things we call personality may have started as adaptation.

Being easy to get along with. Not needing much. Staying out of the way. Keeping the peace. These traits are often praised, and many of them can be genuine strengths. But sometimes they also have deeper roots—patterns we learned early in life to help us navigate the environments around us. In this episode, we explore what happens when we begin looking beneath those patterns with curiosity instead of judgment.

About This Episode

There are ways we learn to move through the world that become so familiar we stop noticing them.

For me, that looked like independence, adaptability, responsibility, and a quiet ability to keep things running smoothly. Growing up as part of the latchkey generation, I learned how to take care of myself early. I learned how to read a room, adjust to shifting dynamics, and make sure I wasn’t creating additional tension for the people around me.

At the time, those skills felt normal.

Later, they felt like personality.

But as I’ve continued my healing journey, I’ve started to wonder whether some of the things I always called “who I am” might also be patterns I learned along the way.

In this episode, I share stories from childhood, school, leadership, work, and adulthood as I explore the connection between early adaptation and the ways we continue to show up today. We’ll talk about people-pleasing, conflict avoidance, decision-making, self-expression, and the subtle ways we can lose touch with our own voice while trying to keep everything around us steady.

Most importantly, we’ll explore the possibility that healing is not about rejecting who we’ve been. It’s about becoming curious about where those patterns came from and whether they still fit the life we’re living now.

If you’ve ever struggled to speak up, make decisions confidently, take up space, or understand why your voice seems to disappear under pressure, this conversation may help you see yourself with a little more compassion.
