Devotional 34: When God’s Answer Looks Different

Most of us assume peace comes after we understand.
If we could just connect the dots…
If we could just see the whole timeline…
If God would simply explain why this happened…
Then surely trusting Him would become easier.
But Proverbs 3 gently turns that thinking upside down.
It doesn’t tell us to understand first and trust later.
It invites us to trust first—even when understanding hasn’t arrived yet.
In this devotional, we’ll explore why God so often gives promises instead of explanations, how Scripture repeatedly calls us to know His character more than His plans, and why the deepest peace isn’t found in having every answer—it’s found in knowing the One who holds every answer.
Because faith has never depended on having the whole story.
It’s always depended on trusting the Author.
Scripture Focus
Proverbs 3:5–6
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; in all your ways know Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
These familiar verses remind us that trust comes before understanding. God doesn’t ask us to figure everything out—He invites us to know His heart and follow Him one faithful step at a time.
Isaiah 55:8–9
God’s thoughts and ways are higher than ours. While we may not always understand His plans, we can rest in the truth that His perspective is far greater than our own.
Hebrews 11
Throughout Scripture, we see men and women who trusted God long before they understood where He was leading. Faith has always been about trusting the One who sees the whole story.
James 1:2–4
Even our waiting can become a place where God forms perseverance, maturity, and a deeper confidence in His character.

Final Thought
Most of us think what we need is an explanation.
But perhaps what we need even more is reassurance.
The reassurance that God is still good.
Still present.
Still faithful.
Still writing a story that isn’t finished yet.
You may not receive every answer you’re longing for today.
But you can remember this:
God has never asked you to trust because you understand everything.
He’s invited you to trust because He has never stopped being trustworthy.
And tomorrow morning…
When the questions return…
May your first prayer simply be:
“Lord… help me trust Your heart when I can’t yet understand Your answer.”
