Devotional 38: Before You Know What to Ask For

What do you pray when you don’t know what to pray?

Sometimes the needs ahead of us are things we couldn’t possibly anticipate.

We don’t know what’s coming.

We don’t know which outcome would actually be best.

Sometimes we don’t even know what we’re feeling well enough to put it into words.

But what if prayer was never dependent on us having complete information?

In this devotional, we’ll explore the relief of knowing that God’s care isn’t limited by what we can see, understand, or remember to ask for—and why you don’t have to know everything you’ll need in order to be held by the God who does.

About This Devotional

There are prayers I remember praying over and over again.

And then there are prayers I never prayed.

Not because I didn’t have faith.

Because I didn’t know I needed them yet.

Years before I knew I had Moyamoya or would need two brain surgeries, I couldn’t possibly have prayed for the surgeon I would eventually need to move from Boston to Houston.

I didn’t know the diagnosis was coming.

I didn’t know what treatment would require.

I didn’t know enough to ask.

And yet… something was already moving.

That story raises a much bigger question about prayer:

What about everything we don’t know to pray for?

In this devotional, we’ll explore Isaiah’s reminder that God can be doing something new even when we don’t perceive it and Paul’s reassurance that when we don’t know what to pray, the Spirit meets us there.

We’ll talk about what happens when prayer becomes tangled with anxiety, the pressure to anticipate every possible future, the fear that we might somehow miss God’s leading, and the difference between attentiveness and trying to predict what God will do next.

Because prayer was never meant to make us responsible for knowing the future.

We can pray specifically about what we know.

We can bring God our hopes, fears, questions, decisions, and needs.

And then…

we can trust Him with everything beyond the edge of our awareness.

Scripture Focus

Isaiah 43:18–19

God tells His people He is doing a new thing and asks a remarkable question:

Do you not perceive it?

Apparently, God can be at work before we’re able to recognize what He’s doing.

He can make a way in the wilderness while the wilderness is still there.

He can send streams into the wasteland without first making the wasteland disappear.

Our inability to perceive His activity does not prevent Him from acting.

Romans 8:26

Scripture also makes room for something deeply human:

Sometimes we don’t know what to pray.

We don’t know what we need.

We don’t know what’s coming.

We don’t know which outcome would ultimately be best.

And sometimes we simply don’t have words.

Romans reminds us that this isn’t where prayer fails.

It’s a place where the Spirit meets us.

Pray what you know. Trust God with what you don’t.

Reflection Question

What are you trying to know before you need to know it?

Is there a future conversation you’ve already rehearsed?

A decision you’re trying to solve before it’s yours to make?

A possible diagnosis?

Something involving your children, marriage, work, or finances?

A future you’ve already lived through seventeen different ways in your head?

What would happen if you allowed yourself to say:

“I don’t know what will happen here.”

And let the sentence end there?

Then ask yourself one more question:

What do I actually know to pray today?

Bring that to God.

Pray what you know.

And trust Him with what you don’t.

Final Thought

There are things about tomorrow you cannot know today.

Needs you cannot anticipate.

People you haven’t met.

Decisions you don’t know you’ll face.

Prayers you don’t know you’ll need to pray.

You were never asked to carry all of that.

You don’t have to search every horizon for the wilderness that might be coming.

You don’t have to anticipate every stream you’ll someday need.

You don’t have to create spiritual coverage for every possible future.

You can be here.

Faithful in this day.

Praying about what you know.

Trusting God with what you don’t.

And when you can’t perceive what He’s doing, you don’t have to assume He’s doing nothing.

Because uncertainty belongs to your view.

Not God’s.

Whatever is waiting beyond the edge of what you can currently see…

God will not arrive there after you.

He’s already there.
