Devotional 37: The Gift of Today

What if receiving the life you have today doesn’t mean giving up hope for the life you’re still praying for?

You can want something to change.

You can keep praying.

You can grieve what isn’t here.

And you can still receive what God has given you for this day.

In this devotional, we’ll explore Psalm 118:24, Israel’s daily manna in the wilderness, and what it means to faithfully inhabit an unfinished life—trusting that God has not postponed His presence or provision until our circumstances improve.

Featured Quote

“You don’t dishonor the promise by receiving the manna.”

About This Devotional

“This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

It’s a beautiful verse.

But what happens when this is the day?

The day you’re tired.

The day the answer still hasn’t come.

The day someone you love is missing.

The day your body isn’t cooperating.

The day you’re carrying a prayer you’ve prayed so many times you aren’t sure what else there is to say.

Scripture doesn’t tell us everything about today will be good.

It invites us to recognize that God is still good—and still present—in it.

In this devotional, we’ll look at the Israelites gathering manna in the wilderness and the remarkable way God taught an entire people to depend on Him one day at a time.

They were still going somewhere.

The wilderness wasn’t their destination.

The manna wasn’t the promise.

But it was God’s loving provision for that part of the journey.

Together, we’ll explore why receiving isn’t the same thing as resigning, why grief and gratitude don’t have to take turns, and how we can stop trying to carry provision for days God hasn’t asked us to live yet.

Because you can hope for the Promised Land…

and still eat today’s manna.

Scripture Focus

Psalm 118:24

“This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.”

Not someday.

Not when the prayer is answered.

Not when the uncertainty disappears.

This day.

The invitation isn’t to pretend everything about today is wonderful. It’s to recognize that God is present in the day we’re actually living.

Exodus 16

In the wilderness, God gave Israel enough manna for each day.

They couldn’t stockpile their way out of depending on Him. Every morning, they had to trust that the God who provided yesterday would provide again today.

Maybe we don’t need tomorrow’s manna yet.

Maybe we need today’s portion.

Lamentations 3:22–23

God’s mercies are new every morning.

Not handed to us as one enormous lifetime supply.

Morning by morning, God meets us with the mercy, grace, and provision we need for the day in front of us.

Matthew 6:34

Jesus doesn’t promise that tomorrow will contain nothing difficult. Instead, He brings our attention back to the day we’re actually living.

Tomorrow’s grace belongs to tomorrow.

Today’s grace is here.

Reflection Question

What tomorrow have you been mentally living in?

Is there an answered prayer, changed circumstance, milestone, healing, or resolution that has quietly become the place where you’ve decided life will finally begin?

Then consider:

What might be today’s manna?

Not necessarily the promise you’ve been waiting for.

Not the final answer.

But God’s provision for this part of the journey.

A friendship.

An opportunity.

A little strength.

A moment of laughter.

A place of belonging.

Grace for something difficult.

Where is God already meeting you today?

And what is yours to receive?

Final Thought

Receiving today isn’t resigning yourself to the idea that nothing will ever change.

It’s saying:

“I don’t know what God will do tomorrow, but I refuse to abandon the life He’s given me today.”

You can keep hoping.

Keep praying.

Keep asking.

Keep believing.

And still receive the manna.

Still enjoy dinner with a friend.

Still laugh when something is funny.

Still rest when your body needs rest.

Still do the work that’s yours to do.

Still notice the people sitting beside you.

Still live.

Because the manna wasn’t the Promised Land.

But it was still a gift.

Maybe today is too.

You don’t need tomorrow’s portion yet.

You need today’s.

And when tomorrow becomes today, you can trust that the God who met you here will already be there.

God has not postponed His presence until your circumstances improve.

He’s here.

Today.

And whatever else may be missing…

His presence isn’t.
